Ultasound Bladder Scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce and image of your bladder.
There is no radiation. Ultrasound is very safe and can be performed with minimal or no discomfort.
A gel is uses on the skin and the ultrasound probe is placed against the skin overlying the bladder just above the pubic bone.
This procedure can determine the volume of urine in the bladder including assessment of incomplete bladder emptying.
To assess bladder empyting please come to your appointment with a normal full bladder, or comfortably full bladder so you are able to empty prior to the ultrasound evaluation of any volume of urine left behind.
When you empty the bladder you may be asked to do a Flow Rate. You will be asked to empty the bladder into the flow rate machine. You can do this by sitting on a commode chair over the flow rate machine or by standing. This machine measures the volume you pass and the speed you pass the urine. A bladder scan performed after will determine if you emptied the bladder.
